Christmas Stockings

  • Pattern rating * Easy to knit.
  • Suitable for all standard gauge punchcard & electronic machines.
  • Tension

·       28 stitches & 40 rows = 10 cm (4 ins) over stocking stitch tension dial setting approx 7

·       28 stitches & 40 rows = 10 cm (4 ins) over fair-isle pattern tension dial setting approx 8 (MT+2)

Christmas Stockings knitted from Toe to Top

  • Materials:
  • 150 grams of 4 ply yarn for main colour (MC)
    oddments of contrasting colours 
  • Measurements
  • Length to top of heel 67 cm (26 ½ ins)
    Foot length 30.5 cm (12 ins)

Instructions:

    Push 51 needles at left of centre 0 to WP.  Using MT and waste yarn, cast on and knit a few rows ending with carriage at left.
    Set RC at 000.  Using contrast colour, knit 1 row.

 

Shape heel:

    * push 2 needles at opposite end to carriage to HP on next 16 rows & 1 needle on following 2 rows.
    Bring back 1 needle on next 2 rows and 2 needles on next 16 rows*
    Using MC, knit 88 rows, using contrast colour. knit 1 row.

Shape toe:

    Work as for heel from * to *. 
    Using MC, knit 88 rows.  RC shows 250. 
    Push 51 needles at right of centre 0 to WP.  With purl side facing, pick up stitch from first row worked in contrast colour and place onto needles.  Unravel waste yarn. 102 stitches.

Shape leg:

    Using fair-isle pattern or motif of your choice, lock onto the first row.  Set RC at 000.  Using MC, knit 10 rows. 
    Start pattern row and continue in full fair-isle or single motif fair-isle over the centre 24 needles using MC and contrast colour, knit 9 rows.  Shape sides by increasing 1 stitch at each end on the next row and every following 10th row until there are 132 stitches.  Knit 30 rows.  Using MC knit 10 rows.  RC shows 200. 

Eyelet holes for cord or ribbon (optional):

    knit 2 rows. 
    Transfer every 3rd stitch on to adjacent needle. 
    Leave empty needles in WP. Knit 2 rows.

Cuff: 

    Using chosen pattern, lock onto first row.  Using MT+2 and contrast colour, knit 10 rows in stst,  knit 47 rows in fair-isle pattern then knit 11 rows in stst. Using MT, knit 68 rows. 
    Make a hem by placing loops of first row worked in contrast colour on cuff on to corresponding needles.  Knit 1 row.  Cast off.

Making up: 

    Press with wrong side facing, pin out to measurements given, pressing carefully, following instructions given by yarn manufacturers. 
    Join leg and foot seams.
    Thread cord or ribbon through eyelet holes.

Christmas Stocking with No Heel Shape

    Materials:
    150 grams 4 ply  (MC)
    oddments of contrasting colours
    Size: Approx 65cms length.
Instructions: (Knit 2)Toe:
    Push 8 needles at left & right of centre 0 to WP (16 needles)
    Using MC cast on by hand.  RC 000, MT knit 2 rows.
    Increase 3 st every 2nd  row 3 times.
    Increase 2 st every 2nd row 2 times.
    Increase 1 st every 2nd row 16 times. 74 st, RC 44.
    Leg:  RC 000, using MC & contrast colour, knit in chosen fair-isle pattern to RC 270.
    Using MC, knit 2 rows.  Transfer every 3rd stitch on to adjacent needle.  Leave empty needles in WP. Knit 2 rows.
    Cuff: Change to alternative fair-isle or stripes of 4 rows, and continue knitting to RC 360.  Cast off.
    Cord: Push 3 needles to WP.  Cast on using `e` wrap method.  Using MT-3, knit 155 rows. Cast off.
    To make up: Steam carefully, and join pieces together.  Thread cord through eyelet holes. Fold cuff in half.
