The Fair-isle Cat & all the ScanTheCat patterns written by myself are copyright. No permission is given to anyone to reproduce these books & neither is permission given to anyone to use the designs in production. To sell items using these designs is illegal without written permission of the author Q: What is an "e-book"? An e-book is a different format for buying your books. Instead of receiving a printed book in the mail as is usually done, you will receive a pdf file in an email or a link to a web site page from where you download the pdf file. This is especially good for those people who like instant gratification of having the book and patterns in their hands very quickly. The pdf file will be an exact copy of the book. You print off the book on your own printer. E-patterns are cheaper, faster and of course, there are no postage charges so you save money all round. You will need a program to open .pdf files, although most computers come with one when you buy them. If you don't have a program, Adobe Acrobat Reader can be downloaded free at the Adobe site. The advantage of using .pdf files is that they print off exactly the same size as the designer has intended them to so there are none of the sizing problems you may have had with when downloading and printing files in other formats. Q: If I buy your patterns, I can copy off a few to pass around to my crafting friends, right? WRONG! This is an infringement of my copyright. You can copy for your own personal use only. Making copies for distribution, whether you are selling or giving away the copies is against International Copyright Law. Please note: I reserve the right to refuse to sell my patterns to those persons proven to me to be illegally copying and distributing them. I am sad to say that I have proof of this happening. Q: I used one of your patterns but I changed it a bit and added my own spin so that makes it my design now, doesn't it? In a word - NO it doesn't! One of the great myths circulating around the crafting world is that if you change a design by 10% or more, it makes it your original design. Not true - and you are leaving yourself open to legal action if you do this. If you start a project using anyone's pattern but your own, then it is not your own work and it is not your own design. You can be influenced by the style of another designer but you cannot use their patterns in any way to produce your own "original" work. In this day and age, the crafting world is a surprisingly small place. It is extremely likely that copycat designs will be spotted and the designer will be notified. Please don't do this. It is considered theft of intellectual property just makes a difficult situation for all concerned. If you see this happening and you know who the original designer is, please let them know. They will greatly appreciate it. Q: When I buy an e-book, I can send it on to my friends when I have printed it off myself - yes? No! The same copyright applies to e-books & patterns as to ordinary printed books & patterns. When you buy an e-book, you are buying it for your own personal use only. Q: I want to mass produce the books or mass produce the finished item, is this OK No! Not unless you have entered into a contract with me. I can be contacted by email in the first instance. My cat motif book is only the first book, more will follow, which means that if there is further money to be made from my books then I want in. Q: What about the patterns which don’t use the fair-isle motifs from your cat books? I don’t have any rights over the pattern charts which are in the books which are produced for or by the manufacturers. My rights are the pattern instructions.
