Woman's Day Granny Squares #2, 1974

EASY-GREAT hooded granny square jacket!! Make this jacket out of Bernat Berella Germantown in your favorite colors!

SIZES: One size fits all. Garment width across back at underarms and hips, about 23"; each front, including borders, 12".

MATERIALS: Bernat Berella Germantown, one 2-oz. skein white (color A), 2 skeins honey, (B), 3 skeins
each light orange (C) and orange (D), and 9 skeins gazelle (MC). Crochet hook size G, or size required to crochet to gauge.

GAUGE: Each square = 5-1/2".

SQUARES: Make 64. With A, ch 5; join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in center of ring, * ch 1, 3 dc in center of ring, repeat from * twice more, end ch 1; join with sl st in top of ch 3. Fasten off A. Turn.
Rnd 2: Join B in any ch-1 sp; (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp, sk 3 dc, * (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next sp, sk 3 dc, repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of ch 3. Fasten off B. Turn.
Rnd 3: Join C in any ch-1 corner sp; (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp, * sk 3 dc, 3 dc in next sp between dc groups, sk 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, end sk 3 dc, 3 dc in next sp between dc groups; join with sl st in top of ch 3. Fasten off C. Turn.
Rnd 4: Join D in any ch-1 corner sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp, * (sk 3 dc, 3 dc in next sp) to corner sp, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner sp, repeat from * around; join with sl st to top of ch 3. Fasten off D. Turn.
Rnd 5: Join MC and work as for Rnd 4, join with sl st to top of ch 3, sl st in each of next 2 dc, sl st in corner sp. Turn.
Rnd 6: With MC, work as for Rnd 4; join and fasten off.

ASSEMBLING: Picking up back lps only, sew 20 squares together to form a rectangle 4 squares wide by 5 squares long for back, 2 squares wide by 5 squares long for left front and same for right front, 3 squares wide and 3 squares long for each sleeve, 3 squares wide and 2 squares deep for hood. Sew fronts to back, leaving 1-1/2 squares open at top of each side edge for armholes and sewing shoulders from armhole edge across 1-1/2 squares only. Fold sleeve in half and join adjacent edges. Sew sleeves into armholes. Fold hood in half and sew top edge, forming hood 1-1/2 squares wide from front to back; sew hood to neck edge.

FINISHING: With MC, wrong side facing, work 2 rounds as for Rnd 4 around entire jacket and face edge of hood, working (3 dc ch 1, 3 dc) in each corner at front lower edges. Work same edging around sleeves; seam sleeve edging.

Ties: Make 6. Ch 50, or length desired. Attach to front edge at corners of two top squares, as shown.
