MATERIALS: Size K crocket hook 2 -- 4 oz. pull-skeins Jack Frost Wintuk knitting worsted type yarn EACH of Colors A, B, and C
NOTE: Keep in mind that a poncho has four points (front and back, and two shoulder points). You are working from the top DOWN.
STRIPING PATTERN:
4 rows of color A, then B, then C. 5 rows of color A, then B, then C. 5 rows of color A. Make Fringe with colors B and C.
CHAIN 60
Row 1: 2 dc in the 4th ch, 1 dc in each of the next 13 chain, * 3 dc in next chain, 1 dc in each of the next 13 chains, repeat from * TWICE, 2 dc in the last chain.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in the first dc, 1 dc in each of the next 15 dc, 3 dc in the next dc (Mark this stitch as the CENTER STITCH of the SHOULDER POINT, as ALL INCREASES will ALWAYS be made in the center stitch of the previous INCREASES), 1 dc in each of the next 15 dc, 5 dc in the next dc (Mark this as the BACK POINT and do all INCREASES in the CENTER stitch), 1 dc in each of the next 15 dc, 3 dc in the next dc (Mark this as the SHOULDER POINT and do ALL INCREASES in the CENTER st), 1 dc in each of the next 15 dc, 3 dc in the last dc.
Row 3: Ch 3, (this counts as the first dc), turn, 1 dc in the first dc. Work to the center point of the shoulder, 3 dc in the center point, work to the center point of the BACK, 3 dc in the center point, work to the center point of the shoulder, 3 dc in the center point, work to the LAST stitch, 2 dc in the top of the ch 3.
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), turn, 2 dc in the first dc, work to the center point of the shoulder, 3 dc in the center point, work to the center point of the back, 5 dc in the back point, work to the center point of the shoulder, 3 dc in the shoulder point, work to the last stitch, 3 dc in the top of the ch 3. Remember to work the STRIPING PATTERN.
REPEAT ROWS 3 AND 4 three (3) MORE TIMES.
Row 5: JOINING ROW: Work one slip st. in the top of the ch 3 on the other side (this will be the center of the front point), ch 3, 2 dc in the same stitch, continuing in pattern, work 3 dc in EACH remaining 3 points, ending, 1 slip stitch in the top of the chain 3.
Row 6: Slip stitch across 1 stitch, ch 3 (this counts as the first dc) continuing in pattern, work 5 dc in the center stitch of the back and front points and 3 dc in the center of the shoulder points. (This will make the front and back points longer) (always join the end of the row with a slip stitch to the top of the ch 3).
Row 7: Slip stitch across 2 stitches, ch 3, (this counts as the first dc) continuing in pattern, work 3 dc in each of the center stitch of the FOUR POINTS. REPEAT ROWS 6 & 7 UNTIL STRIPING PATTERN IS COMPLETED.
FINISHING: Put fringe around bottom using colors B & C.
BORDER: Starting at the left side of the neck, work one row of sc around the front opening, then work * 1 sc, ch 1, 2 dc in the next stitch, skip 3 stitches repeat from * around neck. Make a 5 foot chain using one strand each of color B & C. Lace up front (see photo). Block if necessary.
