McCall's Stitchery, Motifs in Crochet, Vol. III, 1972

Scarf-shaped halter has 21 colorful granny square motifs sewn together to form a triangle. Top motif is turned under and tacked to hold the halter chain that ties at the back of the neck. Bottom edge is filled out with 2 rows of shells.

SIZE: One size fits all.

MATERIALS: Sport yarn; small amounts of any desired colors, about 4 ozs. Crochet hook size H.

GAUGE: Each motif = 3".
Notes: Join each rnd with a sl st in top of ch 3. Cut yarn, pull end through lp on hook. Join new color with sl st. Work over ends of previous color and new color to hide them.

TRIANGLE HALTER: Motif (make 21): With first color, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 1, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 1; join, end off (see Notes).
Rnd 2: Join 2nd color in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1 in next sp) 3 times; join; end off.
Rnd 3: Join 3rd color in any corner sp (center of 6 dc group), ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, (3 dc in next sp; ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1 in next sp) 3 times, 3 dc in next sp, ch 1; join; end off.

Joining: Following chart, using colors to match one edge to be joined, sew motifs tog through back lps, forming triangle.

Edging: Row 1: Join any desired color yarn in ch-1 corner sp (A on chart); working across lower edge, ch 3, *
(3 dc in next ch-1 sp between 3-dc group) twice, ch 2, sc in ch-1 corner sp, ch 2, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp) twice, dc
in joining of motifs, repeat from * across lower edge, end dc in last ch-1 corner sp (B on chart); end off; do not
turn.
Next Rnd: With any desired color yarn, dc in top of starting ch 3 at beg of last row, ch 2, * shell of 3 dc in next
ch-1 sp between shells, (ch 2, sc in next ch-2 sp) twice, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp between shells, dc in dc
between shells, repeat from * across lower edge, end last repeat dc in last dc, ch 1; do not end off. Work sc, ch
1 evenly spaced across each side edge, end sl st in first dc; end off; do not turn.
Next Rnd: Join another color in first dc; (ch 2, sc in next ch-2 sp) 4 times, * 4 dc in dc between motifs, sc in next
ch-2 sp, (ch 2, sc in next ch-2 sp) twice, repeat from * across lower edge, end last repeat ch 2, sc in last dc; end off.

FINISHING: Steam-press lightly. Fold top motif in half to wrong side; weave outer edge of motif in place.

Ties: With double strand of any color yarn, make ch 44" long. Run through top edge of halter. Make two ties 20" long; sew a tie to each point at lower edge.
